PROW Week 14 - My PROW Journal

PROW Week 14

For this week! It's Gerald's Production group's turn to present. Their presentation was about what each of them do within their own team. The whole Gerald's group is split up into two groups. Currently they got 4 different songs that they are working on, and 3 of them are done. They talked about their role, how they do stuff in order to work fast and effectively. "Individual brain storing and collective.. together and stuff" Like who's better at chords will do the chords and who's better in horns will write the horns part. So basically everyone try their best to be versatile so as to cover up flaws of each member.

I feel that their system are quite logical, and simple to understand, but to really make this whole thing work, it requires a lot of effort. Because, in this case, you will have to know your own strength and weakness well, and even know your team mate's strength and weakness well. I feel that this might limit the learning to a certain extent(?) Like for example, our prow group, not everyone have a 'major major' strength. We got a lot of group member who knows a little about, for example, recording and a little of song writing. Basically, everyone just knows a little of every other thing. I feel that maybe to use prow time to improve on or work on what we are good at is kind of not as beneficial(?).

Because I always think that the best way to learn something is by trial and error. I feel that if you just follow theory, sure you will know what to do. But to know a subject really really well, you also have to know what NOT to do(?) I don't know, this is just my opinion. That's why I prefer our group's working style. Like what Tim had said, we shouldn't put all the eggs into one basket. We should always be daring to explore, make mistakes and ask questions. But must learn from all the mistakes that you've made ah. Currently, we still do quite a lot of stuff together. Everyone stays together, even though the task requires only just a few people. We can learn from the mistakes our group mate had made too. So yea.

So after the presentation, we went to Studio C, as usual. The first thing we did was to borrow a Charter Oak Microphone to record Thaddeus's vocals for his own song. The recording went smoothly, despite the fact that it was early morning, and Thaddeus have not warm up yet. HAHAHAH Good job :>
While the recording session is going on, I went to 44 to continue working on my song. Meanwhile, the usual group of people will be in 44 too, working on WeeAnn's song lyric, and there's Mabel and YanYun trying to complete their song as soon as possible. :)
For our group, I think the hard part is composition. It's really hard to write a song, especially a nice song. I mean the song is the main thing about production(?) If the song was not well written, good producing skills helps but only to a certain extent. I remembered asking Tim, if song writing is within production. Now that I think about it, it's as important as the other factors. If the song was unbearable, with good recording, good mix, I don't think anyone will listen it for long either. The whole deal is to allow the listeners to have a great time listening to our produced song in comfort. So yea. :)

~LUNCH~
So after lunch, Thaddeus continue to record his vocals, while everyone continued what they were doing before lunch. After Thaddeus was done with his vocals. The group that were helping WeeAnn to write his lyric were done with the lyrics too. They stayed at at night, Skype to work on the lyrics. Thanks a lot guys! So much efforts were made to speed up the whole Production process this time. x) You guys have worked hard! So they brought in the lyrics, and we recorded Vanessa's vocals for Wee Ann's song. After all, its a KAWAII Japanese song. Really glad we wrote the lyrics in Japanese though. What's wrong with Japanese lyrics, and what's wrong with JPop. LOL.
However, we got some problems with the Protools file. Everything played back was distorted, and Vanessa's recording kept clipping. We couldn't fix it. Until Tim came back, and we realise that its just the Protools file got a bit of a problem, so we closed and reopen the file. Tim then changed the sample rate of the Protools file. I think the previous user was using the mac for POD, therefore the sample rate was high. To make the chorus full, we asked YingHui to sing along with Vanessa. Yea that's all for that day! :)
